Economics 101 -1

It seems we have a pretty good example of what I wrote the other day - Yah-boo sucks politics.

I just had to scrape Mrs Smith off the ceiling yet again, after she was reading about a bunch of opposition supporters saying the Government was useless.

Why? Because as far as we can tell the Government offered around US$40 for vaccines last year, and the deal two businesses have just done cost US$32.

To be honest those who know the reason should be embarrassed to point something that is pretty much on page one of Economics 101.

Deep breath. Now Class, listen carefully. When a product is new, it holds a value that is higher than when it becomes older. Also, the more of a certain product you buy, the cheaper it is.

Here is an example which everyone should know about. Price tracking has shown that with iPhones – as with other major phones and other products – it makes sense to wait a few weeks before buying a newly released model. According to the European price watching service Idealo, the price of new iPhone models drops by an average of 8% in the first two months after their release. After four months, the average drop was 14%.

The iPhone released a year ago costs 24% less on average, according to Idealo figures.

So, in terms of the vaccine, $40 minus $32 is $8. That makes the latest vaccine purchase 20% cheaper which does not compare favourably with our iPhone example.

It is reasonable to take iPhones as a benchmark of the way new products usually come down in value in the normal scheme of economic behaviour, which takes into account things like competition. Like more companies are now making vaccines than a year ago. QED

And this before taking into account there was a huge difference in the amount ordered so the price should have been lower than US$32 and that seems to indicate that the Government last year would have actually struck a better deal than this latest one in real terms.

Shrill Yah-boo sucks voices again, beware of them and look at the evidence.

Bill and Ben the Vaccine Men

Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men
(AKA Bill and Ben the Vaccine Men)

Yah-boo sucks politics

I apologise for sinking into the serious, but I thought it might be worth discussing the rise of Yah-Boo Sucks politics. As a frustrated political cartoonist my somewhat pathetic attempt at illustrating what I mean is below.

Along with the vast majority of those of us lucky enough to live in democracies with the right to free speech, I am a firm believer that to have a functioning democracy, and also the need for adversarial politics.

It helps keep the elected administration in line and, with luck and a following wind, holds them to account for any outlandish or dangerous decisions they may attempt to implement.

On paper, it all looks fine and has the appearance that it might work pretty well. Sadly, when you come up against human nature, things start to look very different.

I hesitate to quote Winston Churchill as he was certainly not a perfect parliamentarian and had ideas I would never support, and character flaws I can well recognise, but I do strongly agree with what he said about democracy.

“Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” (He said this in a speech to parliament on November 11, 1947. A highly significant day in the UK being the anniversary of the end of WW1 and this just two years after the end of WW2)

My fear at the moment is that the adversarial nature of democratic government is giving way to what has become known as Yah-boo sucks politics, and therefore the politics of the schoolyard.

More importantly, it precludes debate.

Yah-boo sucks politics is perhaps best described in English terms as “I’m right, your are wrong - f**k off.”

When it manifests itself, it is unconstructive in nature and generally demonstrates that one side is doing a good job and that their critics have no fresh ideas and can only sink to the schoolyard level of... I’m right, you are wrong. It also demonstrates a lack of mutual respect, which really should not be the case with people in such elevated positions.

Look at the US, a sad case in this respect. We have Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican) firmly proclaiming “the era of bipartisanship is over.”

As the old saying goes. If you don’t know what pornography is, you will know it when you see it.

A statement that no matter what policy the government comes up with, it will be opposed. It’s a race to the bottom for any country which relies on the democratic government process, and really has to be avoided at all costs.

It’s easy to see the issues the US is having with its democracy, and similar things are beginning to happen elsewhere in the world. Good democracy is under threat in many areas.

Everyone living in any democracy needs to be on the lookout for Yah-boo sucks politicians and immediately ask if their criticism is justified, backed up by evidence and whether the critic has any ideas of their own to offer.

Being a news junkie, I see examples of it every day somewhere in the world.

Political dogma on the part of some individuals means those questions never get asked, lack of attention to politics is another.

But for those who watch these things and value the freedoms democracy brings, it’s vital to continually challenge the school yard rhetoric, and not let political power seekers further their cause when they are apparently bereft of ideas of their own and rarely seem to put forward an alternative case.

It’s like the neighbour's little yappy dog biting your ankles. If you ask him why he’s doing it, he'll likely reply “I don’t know, I’m a small yappy dog for Christ’s sake... and that’s what small yappy dogs do, right?….gggrrrrrr snap, chew.”

What you really want to do is launch the little blighter over the horizon with a well aimed kick, but neighbourliness prevents you from doing so.

Sometimes, opposition parties are the small yappy dog and there is no need to be so kind to small yappy politicians who might be threatening your democracy. Challenge them as loudly as you can.

Stay on the alert for creeping menace of Yah-boo sucks politics, wherever it manifests itself. Otherwise those with no fresh ideas and just a lust for power will be running your life.

Tinkerty Tonk。。。

Limerick

An unreconstructed Mayor from Taipei

Said something that upset our gays

He only vaguely supported their weddings

But now blames them for spreading

The Covid that won't go away

What's up Doc?

Who's going to pay my dentist bill? 《

I need to go and see my dentist. I’m now having trouble eating as my jaw seems to be dropping more each day. It’s a shame the Health Minister, Uncle Chen, is not still practising as he seems such a nice guy and clearly does a good job in a carefully thought out and measured way. I’d certainly trust him to fix my newly dropped jaw.

I honestly can’t believe that Mr Wannabe is throwing his toys out of his pram over what an aging journalist -- who is generally more concerned about his orchid cuttings or worried that his homemade Ginger Beer is going to explode and destroy the fridge -- is saying.

I really don’t get what is going on in his head. I would have to pay a Public Relations company thousands of dollars a day for the kind of publicity he is providing us for free. I daresay there is a trade group for public relationship companies in Taiwan and they really should get onto him as he is a one-man publicity machine.

One wonders how many things he has to get wrong and how many, frankly bizarre, statements he has to make before someone in his immediate group of supporters has the good sense to take him to one side and whisper in his ear…”Er, sir, I wonder if this is wise...you are several parsecs away from the presidency and it’s not a good look to go picking fights with ex-journalists -- he’s not from America by the way -- you need to calm down a bit.”

“If we somehow do get you through to representing the KMT at the next election you are going to need to stop getting so upset with people who don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.”

I’m sure this anonymous adviser is scanning the Sunday Editions of the Jobs Vacant listings as we speak. I would be if I were him because there doesn’t seem a whole lot of future in his current job.

It’s true that all politicians, or wannabe politicians are a bit paranoid and it’s generally accepted that it goes with the turf. It’s like saying performers are egotistical, or course they are, or they wouldn’t be performers. But for a politician it usually manifests itself after a time in high office. There are many examples too numerous to mention here.

Here, for your convenience dear reader., is the definition of paranoia I cut and pasted from Google

"Some identifiable beliefs and behaviours of individuals with symptoms of paranoia include mistrust, hypervigilance, difficulty with forgiveness, defensive attitude in response to imagined criticism, preoccupation with hidden motives, fear of being deceived or taken advantage of, inability to relax, or are argumentative.”

I’m as far away from being a psychologist as Mr Wannabe is from being President, but he seems to be exhibiting quite a few of those, er, shall we say... qualities.

Just to put the record straight, yet again, given the amount of rubbish that is going around about my career, here is my CV which has been available on the internet for a couple of decades now. Just to be super-super clear...I no longer work for Reuters and don’t represent them in any way. I also do not represent any other foreign media.

I’ll also repeat that neither of us have any association with the DPP and we are not members of the party. We are simply independent people exercising their right to free speech. There is nothing sinister here...we are simply pointing and laughing at dimwits who either are politicians, or aspire to be, and praising what we perceive to be people in government doing a good job.

https://sites.google.com/site/philsmithcurriculumvitae/

But I would like to very sincerely thank Mr Wannabe as he has increased the hits to our blog by 10s of thousands just in the last couple of days and helped us with huge free publicity. If he carries on at this rate we’ll have millions of followers come the next election. We couldn’t have done it without him...so heartfelt thanks.

Tinkerty Tonk...

Tinkerty Tonk...
